The agri-food sector plays a vital role in food security, income generation and economic development in Chad. However, the competitiveness of local agri-food products remains limited by a number of shortcomings affecting their quality and compliance with food safety standards.
To help improve the situation, the West Africa and Sahel Food System Resilience Programme (PRSA-TD), with financial support from the World Bank, organised a training-of-trainers course from 29 June to 4 July 2026 on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Standards, reporting, monitoring and a plan for scaling up the lessons learnt.
This capacity-building session brought together around fifteen key stakeholders from the agricultural sector to deepen their knowledge of sanitary and phytosanitary measures – which are essential for ensuring the quality and safety of agricultural products – whilst strengthening their skills in monitoring, inspection, reporting and the dissemination of best practices.
This training marks the start of a new phase: the roll-out of the knowledge gained across the country’s various regions, so that farmers, trade organisations and technical services can benefit fully from the knowledge acquired.
It also aims to equip Chad with national expertise capable of supporting the modernisation of agriculture and meeting the demands of regional and international markets.
This initiative will help to strengthen the resilience of Chad’s agricultural system, improve the competitiveness of domestic products and capitalise on the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
